Is there internet at Berkeley Trail Adventure?
A Bay Area 50k that starts minutes from the city and quickly disappears into the canyon dead zones of the Berkeley Hills.
Where it is
Tilden & Wildcat Canyon Regional ParksCoverage shading is an illustrative estimate of the connectivity conditions at this venue, not measured carrier data.
It is easy to assume a race this close to Berkeley has flawless coverage. The start/finish area usually does — you are perched on a ridge overlooking the whole bay.
The moment the course drops into the folds of Tilden and Wildcat Canyon, though, runners and the crews tracking them lose signal in exactly the spots where a check-in matters most.
Why the signal struggles here
The Berkeley Hills are a maze of steep canyons. Towers on the ridgelines cover the high ground well but cannot reach down into the drainages, so coverage flips between strong and nonexistent within a few hundred yards of trail.
For a tracking crew trying to post live splits or confirm a runner cleared an aid station, that inconsistency is the whole problem. A stable connection at the finish tent keeps everyone coordinated even when the runners are off in the dead zones.
