Starlink for Camping and Road Trips: What You Need and When Renting Makes Sense
Sky view, power, mounting and cost: what it takes to get a reliable connection at a campsite or on a road trip, and when renting beats buying.
Yes, it works. A Starlink Mini will get you online at a campsite if the dish can see the sky and you can power it. Starlink and cell service are separate networks, so a spot with zero bars can still have a connection. Below: what to check before you go, and when renting is cheaper than owning.
- Needs
- Clear sky
- Trees and walls block the signal
- Power
- Car or AC
- Both cords come in our kit
- Rental rate
- $20/day
- $120 for a full week
What you need at a campsite
- A clear view of the sky. Branches, canyon walls and the edge of an RV roof all block the signal.
- Power from a car, an AC outlet or a battery that can run the dish.
- The dish and a data plan. Our rental includes unlimited data, so there is nothing to subscribe to, and your WiFi name and password arrive by email with your booking.
- A place to put it: on the ground in the clearest spot, or on a car roof with the magnetic mount.
Check the spot before you set up
Choose the spot for the dish, not for the tent. Stand where you plan to put it and use the obstruction scanner in the Starlink app to look at the sky. If the app shows obstructions, move the dish a few feet and scan again. Our setup and obstruction guide explains how to read the result. A site at the edge of a meadow usually beats one under dense tree cover.
Powering a Starlink Mini while camping
The rental kit covers two setups without buying anything extra:
- From your car: a cigarette lighter charging cord, plus a USB-C to Starlink Mini cord.
- From an AC outlet: an AC plug for cabins and other places with AC power.
For tent camping away from your vehicle, bring your own battery or power station. Our guidance is a unit with DC output (12V to 48V supported) and at least 100W of continuous output, and the kit includes cables to connect it. We do not supply a battery. Our Mini performance and power guide covers the off-grid basics.
Mounting and placing the dish
- On the ground: set it where the sky is clearest and run the cable back to camp.
- On a car roof: the kit includes a magnetic mount for steel-roofed cars. It only holds on steel, so check that a magnet sticks to your roof first.
- Higher up: if trees are the problem, moving the dish sideways may not be enough. The obstruction guide covers other mounting options.
Road trips and RVs
On the road the rules are the same: clear sky, power, and a mount that stays put. You can use the Mini from a moving vehicle, but expect it to cut out in tunnels and under overpasses. The how it works page has the details.

“When I needed a starling rental for my camping trip in Yosemite a few weeks ago, I wasn't sure where to go, but found this company who was reasonably priced and the communication was solid. Pick up was super easy with their locker and would highly recommend renting from them in the future.”
A simple packing checklist

- Offline maps and a plan for places with no signal of any kind
Common questions
Does Starlink work while camping?
Yes, when the dish has a clear view of the sky and power. A site with no cell service can still get a Starlink connection.
Do I need my own Starlink plan to rent one?
No. Every rental includes an unlimited data plan.
Can several people use it at once?
Yes. It works like any other WiFi network, so phones and laptops connect with the name and password we email you. See how it works.
Can I book for tomorrow?
Often, yes. Check availability for your dates; same-day rentals are possible when a unit is free. Bookings made less than 7 days before the start date are not refundable, so double-check your dates.
